Container Gardening

We planted some basil and tomato plants today. (Now we just need a mozzarella plant!) Our soil here is mostly hard clay, so we're growing them in pots on the deck. We probably won't be as lucky as we were in Ohio, where we had the perfect yard for tomato growing. (Our poor neighbor next door, who was actually a much better gardener than we were but had a shadier lot, was rather jealous!) But we hope that we can at least keep them alive (and not eaten by deer or other critters).

The tomato plants that we have are purple tomatoes from the Farmer's Market. Mike asked the farmer what variety made the best sandwiches, and he said that this was the one that won the taste test every year. We'll see. We may get a couple of "regular" tomato plants, too, just to be on the safe side.

Some articles about the recent bad economy have suggested that people can save money by growing their own food. Those authors have apparently never been to the garden store with my husband.
