Happy St. Patty's Day!

For now, we're celebrating our St. Patrick's Day with an afternoon at home, but at least one of us is wearing green. :) And we're playing our Irish music.

We have a four-CD set that we bought at a little hole-in-the-wall music shop downtown, under the mistaken impression that it was a collection of folk music. (The title of the collection is "Best of Folk," so you can see how this would have happened.) As it turns out, it's all Irish folk, and a lot of it is really good, though it's mostly not the traditional Irish songs that you'd hear in a bar.

My two favorite songs from the set are "Maggie May" and "Drag Queen Blues." Don't be fooled -- Maggie May is not the Rod Stewart song, though they're both about "love" gone wrong. This one is much catchier. You could do a jig to it, if you were so inclined. (And this one ends with the chorus, "Dirty robbin' wh*re oh Maggie May!")

Drag Queen Blues starts out like this: "My friend George is a drag queen called Nancy/Pray tell me which are you tonight/If you're George, let's have a game of snooker/If you're Nancy, let's turn out the lights..." (If you want to hear the rest, it's online here -- scroll down to "songs".)
