Power in our Union

After living in Philadelphia, we were no fans of the unions. The Philly unions embodied the worst of organized labor. They were greedy at the expense of the greater good. The story that stands out the most was how the electrical unions were essentially extorting huge sums of money from inner city schools that were already more than strapped for funds, but there were many others: the carpenters' union inflating prices so much that the Convention Center had trouble attracting tenants, the plumbers' union blocking legislation that would have allowed modern building materials rather than older fashioned (and yes, far more expensive) pipes to be installed in city buildings, and the list goes on, and that was just what hit the news while we lived there. And if people tried to cross them, well, bad things might happen to your house or your building project.

But this writers' strike I can sympathize with. The people who do the creative work to make our entertainment possible should get a fair share of the profits, no matter what the medium of distribution might be. Let's hope they can come to a good resolution soon. (After all, they just racheted up the suspense on Heroes; they can't leave us hanging now!)
